This is the most practical Milford base. You are already close to SH94, can fuel and pack in town, and have a more realistic day than starting from Queenstown. Self-drive cruise and coach-cruise both make sense from here. Fill up and take food before leaving: DOC advises there are no shops or fuel stations between Te Anau and Milford Sound/Piopiotahi.
Queenstown to Milford Sound and back is a very long day. If you are not staying in Te Anau, a coach-cruise or fly-back style option can reduce fatigue. If you drive yourself, check Queenstown approach roads as well as the Te Anau-to-Milford SH94 section.
Some booking links may earn Te Anau Town a commission at no extra cost to you.
