Road rhythm

Plan the journey, not just the destination.

A good Milford day starts calm in Te Anau: fuel, food, weather, timing, and enough space for stops.

Self-Drive Checklist

  • Fuel: Fill the tank in Te Anau before leaving.
  • Food: Pack lunch, snacks, and water. There are no shops between Te Anau and Milford Sound.
  • Toilets: Plan around Te Anau, Knobs Flat, and Milford Sound.
  • Bookings: Check your cruise time and allow enough road time.
  • Weather: Check Te Anau, Homer Tunnel area, and Milford conditions.
  • Road status: Check official SH94 status and the 0800 road line.
  • Maps: Download offline maps before you leave town.
  • Clothing: Bring warm layers and rain protection even in summer.
  • Driving: Do not stop on the road for photos. Use safe pull-outs.

What To Skip If Short On Time

  • Very short on time: Prioritise Eglinton Valley, Mirror Lakes, Homer Tunnel, and the cruise.
  • Running late: Skip longer walks such as Key Summit and Lake Marian.
  • Bad road weather: Reduce stops and keep decision-making simple.
  • Driving from Queenstown: Treat it as a very long day. Get to Milford first and do scenic stops on the return if your cruise timing is tight.

Best Stops In Order

01

Eglinton Valley

Wide open mountain valley. Great early photo stop without a long walk.

02

Mirror Lakes

Very short boardwalk. Best when the water is calm, often earlier in the day.

03

Knobs Flat

Good practical stop with proper toilets. Useful before the road climbs higher.

04

Lake Gunn Nature Walk

Easy forest loop if you have time and the weather is kind.

05

The Divide

Start point for Key Summit and Routeburn access. Skip longer walks if cruise timing is tight.

06

Monkey Creek

Roadside alpine stop near the climb toward Homer Tunnel.

07

Homer Tunnel

Mountain weather zone. Expect traffic lights and possible waits. Watch for kea but do not feed them.

08

The Chasm

Check whether the walk is open before relying on it. Flood repairs can affect access.

09

Milford Sound

Arrive early enough for parking, toilets, check-in, and a calm start to your cruise.

Clear Day Advice

Leave early if you want reflections at Mirror Lakes and calmer road stops. Clear days are ideal for Eglinton Valley, Key Summit if you have time, and wide mountain views.

  • Start with a full tank and packed food.
  • Use safe pull-outs, not road edges.
  • Protect time for parking and cruise check-in.

Rainy Day Advice

Rain can make Milford extraordinary, with waterfalls appearing across the cliffs. The tradeoff is road caution, lower visibility, and more need to check official updates.

  • Keep stops shorter and driving slower.
  • Bring waterproof layers and camera protection.
  • Be ready to change plans if the road status worsens.

Leaving Queenstown Or Staying In Te Anau?

Leaving Queenstown

This makes a very long day. DOC advises allowing 12-14 hours for Queenstown to Milford return, so fatigue is a real planning issue. Check the Queenstown-to-Te Anau approach roads separately, including Gorge Hill if the weather is cold, then use this planner for the Te Anau-to-Milford section.

Staying In Te Anau

This is the easier and better-paced option. Te Anau to Milford and back is about 240 km, and DOC suggests an eight-hour day if you want short walks, scenic stops, and a cruise. You can fuel and pack calmly, then enjoy the road instead of racing it.

Save or print this page before leaving town. For a simple day: fuel in Te Anau, leave early, stop at Eglinton Valley, Mirror Lakes, Knobs Flat, Lake Gunn if time allows, Homer Tunnel, then arrive at Milford Sound with enough time for parking and check-in.
