Kepler, Milford, Routeburn, and current Fiordland track notices

Great Walk planning

Compare the big Fiordland walks from a Te Anau base.

Start with Kepler, Milford, Routeburn, and Hump Ridge context, then follow the official DOC links for bookings, prices, alerts, and current track rules.

Which Great Walks Matter From Te Anau?

For most Te Anau visitors, the main Great Walks to compare are the Kepler Track, Milford Track, and Routeburn Track. They are the Fiordland tracks most naturally connected to a Te Anau stay.

The Hump Ridge Track is also part of the official Great Walk family and sits in Southern Fiordland, but it is usually planned from Tuatapere rather than Te Anau. It belongs here as useful context, not as a town-based day decision.

Kepler Track

61.5 km loopdistance 3-4 daysusual time Starts near Te Anaubase note

The easiest Fiordland Great Walk to organise from Te Anau. It starts close to town, loops through lake shore, beech forest, alpine ridges, Luxmore Hut, Iris Burn, and Lake Manapouri country.

Best fit: Best for walkers who want a full Great Walk without complex start and finish transport.

The famous one-way walk from the head of Lake Te Anau to Milford Sound. It needs hut bookings and transport at both ends, and camping is not permitted on the independent DOC track.

Best fit: Best for visitors who can plan early and want the iconic hut-to-hut Fiordland experience.

Hump Ridge Track

60 km loopdistance 3 daysusual time Plan from Tuataperebase note

A Southern Fiordland Great Walk operated through a partnership between DOC and the Tuatapere Hump Track Charitable Trust. It is worth knowing about, but it is not a Te Anau trailhead walk.

Best fit: Best for travellers building a wider Southland or Southern Fiordland trip.

Newest southern option Different booking system Better from Tuatapere
Te Anau track base

The right walk depends less on fame and more on logistics, weather, and fitness.

Kepler is the cleanest Te Anau base. Milford is the classic but needs the most forward planning. Routeburn is brilliant if you solve transport. Hump Ridge belongs to a wider Southern Fiordland itinerary.

If Great Walk Huts Are Full

You can still get a strong Great Walk feel from Te Anau without a full hut booking. These are good backup ideas to check with DOC and local conditions.

Brod Bay or Dock Bay

Shorter Kepler Track sections from the Control Gates or by water taxi. Good for forest, lake shore, and a proper Great Walk surface without committing to the alpine tops.

Luxmore Hut Day Walk

A big fitness day from the Kepler side. Only attempt it with enough daylight, layers, food, and a willingness to turn around if the weather changes.

Key Summit

A Routeburn-side day walk from The Divide on the Milford Road. Excellent alpine views in good conditions, but it still needs track and weather checks.

Rainbow Reach

An easy way to touch the Kepler Track from a different access point, with the swing bridge, Waiau River, and lake/forest sections nearby.

Booking, Weather, and Safety

  • Book with official sources: Use DOC for Kepler, Milford, and Routeburn huts/campsites. Use the Hump Ridge Track website for Hump Ridge bookings.
  • Check the specific track page: Season dates, fees, hut rules, campsites, and transport details differ by track and can change.
  • Respect winter and shoulder-season conditions: Outside Great Walk season, Fiordland tracks can involve snow, avalanche terrain, flooding, short daylight, and reduced facilities. Check current weather and road conditions before heading out.
  • Carry a way to call for help: Cell coverage is limited or absent on these tracks. A personal locator beacon is a sensible safety baseline.
  • Let the weather decide: Heavy rain, wind, snow, or avalanche risk can close tracks or make the right decision a rest day in Te Anau. See travel tips for packing and planning advice.
