Stay decision guide

Where To Stay For Fiordland

Te Anau, Manapouri, Milford Sound, or Queenstown: choose the base that matches the trip.

For most visitors, Te Anau is the practical answer. The exceptions are worth knowing, because the wrong base can turn a beautiful Fiordland day into too much driving.

Fast Answer

Stay In Te Anau

Best for Milford Road, Glowworm Caves, Kepler Track, food, fuel, supermarket, and a balanced Fiordland trip.

Stay In Manapouri

Best if Doubtful Sound is your main reason for visiting and you want a quieter lake village.

Stay In Queenstown

Best for airport nights and wider South Island trips, but less ideal as a Milford Sound base.

Te Anau: Best All-Round Base

Choose Te Anau if Fiordland is the focus. It gives you the easiest access to Milford Road, Te Anau Glowworm Caves, lakefront walks, Kepler Track sections, restaurants, fuel, supplies, and visitor information.

Manapouri: Best For Doubtful Sound

Choose Manapouri if Doubtful Sound is the main event and you prefer a smaller, quieter lake base. Dining and supermarket options are limited, so stock up in Te Anau if self-catering.

Milford Sound And Queenstown

Milford Sound: Overnight options are limited and should be checked carefully. Most visitors are better staying in Te Anau and visiting Milford as a day trip.

Queenstown: Useful for airport arrivals, departures, and extra activities, but Milford Sound becomes a much longer day. Consider a coach-cruise if you are not breaking the trip in Te Anau.
