Activity Planning Secrets

  • Compare options: Price independent and guided Kepler Track plans using current transport, accommodation, equipment, and DOC fees
  • Weather: Rain can create temporary Milford waterfalls; clearer weather can reveal more of the surrounding peaks
  • Booking Tip: Book Great Walks when DOC bookings open - peak dates can sell out fast
  • Free Alternative: Kepler day walks give you a Great Walk feel without hut fees
  • Best Value: Compare coach-cruise, self-drive cruise, and fly-back options against your time, weather, and fatigue

Hiking & Tramping

Kepler Track (60km, 3-4 days): One of New Zealand's Great Walks, the Kepler Track offers a spectacular loop through diverse terrain. Starting from the Kepler Track car park just 5km from Te Anau, the track climbs through beech forest to alpine ridges with panoramic views. It is the easiest Great Walk to organise from a Te Anau base, but huts, campsites, season dates, and fees should always be checked through DOC.

Milford Track (53.5km, 4 days in the Great Walk season): This one-way Great Walk requires hut bookings and transport at both ends. From Glade Wharf it follows the Clinton valley, crosses Mackinnon Pass, passes the Sutherland Falls side-trip junction, and finishes at Sandfly Point for the booked boat connection. Outside the Great Walk season it is a more demanding backcountry trip with different facilities and hazards.

Routeburn Track (33km, 2-4 days): This alpine adventure connects Fiordland with Mount Aspiring National Park. The Divide end is 85km from Te Anau, while the other end is near Glenorchy, so transport between trailheads matters. The track features stunning mountain scenery, alpine lakes, and diverse ecosystems.

Day Walks from Te Anau:

  • Kepler Track Day Walk: Brod Bay return is 11.2km and about 3 hours. Luxmore Hut return is 27.6km and roughly 10-12 hours — a very strenuous full day that needs suitable weather, fitness, equipment, and a current DOC conditions check.
  • Lake Mistletoe Track: Easy 1.3km loop through native forest, taking about 45 minutes
  • Lakefront and bird-sanctuary walks: Choose a turnaround point to suit your group and check the DOC route description before continuing toward the Upukerora River mouth
  • Rainbow Reach to Shallow Bay Hut: About 1 hour 30 minutes one way to a six-bunk backcountry hut; this is not a one-hour-return beach stroll

Water Activities

Kayaking on Lake Te Anau: Local operators may offer guided paddles, longer lake trips, or equipment hire for appropriately experienced paddlers. Lake conditions can change quickly, so check current availability, weather limits, safety equipment, and cancellation terms before building the day around it.

Fishing: Lake Te Anau is renowned for brown and rainbow trout fishing. The lake and surrounding rivers offer fly fishing and spin fishing opportunities. You can hire a local guide or fish independently with the correct Fish & Game licence. Check current licence fees, access rules, and season dates before you go. Popular areas include the Eglinton River, Mararoa River, and Whitestone River.

Boat cruises: Lake Te Anau trips can include shorter outings and heritage or nature-focused cruises. Departure points, schedules, and inclusions vary, so use the current operator details before booking.

Scenic Flights

Helicopter Tours: Experience Fiordland from above with short local flights, longer Milford or Doubtful Sound routes, and alpine landing options. Popular choices include flights over the Kepler Track, Milford Sound, and remote glacier country. Always check current prices, minimum numbers, weather rules, and cancellation terms.

Fixed-wing scenic flights: Options may include Milford Sound, Doubtful Sound, and wider Fiordland circuits. Compare current operators, departure airfield, aircraft type, routing, weather terms, and whether ground transport or a cruise is included.

Tours & Experiences

Te Anau Glowworm Caves

This is Te Anau's signature experience. The tour begins with a scenic cruise across Lake Te Anau to the western shores. Guides lead you through the cave system, explaining the geology and ecology, before a silent boat ride through the glowworm grotto. The caves are young in geological terms and feature underground waterfalls and limestone formations. Check current departures, child rules, and prices before booking. Photography is not permitted in the glowworm grotto to protect the sensitive ecosystem.

Milford Sound Day Tours

Coach and cruise: These products combine Milford Road transport with a cruise. Stops, pickup points, travel time, vessel, inclusions, and wildlife sightings vary, so compare the current itinerary and cancellation terms before booking.

Fly-Cruise-Fly: For a premium experience, fly to Milford Sound by small aircraft, enjoy a cruise, and fly back. This saves road time and provides spectacular aerial views, but it is highly weather dependent.

Coach-Cruise-Fly: A popular compromise is to coach to Milford, cruise the sound, then fly back if conditions allow. You experience the scenic drive and save time on the return.

Doubtful Sound Overnight Cruises

For a more remote and intimate fiord experience, Doubtful Sound overnight cruises offer deep wilderness immersion. The journey begins with travel to Manapouri, a boat cruise across Lake Manapouri to West Arm, a coach journey over Wilmot Pass, and then boarding in Deep Cove. Overnight options usually include meals, cabin accommodation, nature commentary, and sometimes kayaking. Check the current operator, inclusions, prices, and season before booking.

Mountain Biking

Use designated cycling routes such as the Lake2Lake Trail and Perenuka Mountain Bike Park at Ivon Wilson Recreation Reserve. Mountain biking is not permitted on the Kepler Track. Other options such as Borland Road need the right bike, current access checks, and preparation for a remote gravel road. Popular rides include:

  • Lake2Lake Trail: A purpose-built shared trail between Te Anau and Manapouri, with shorter out-and-back options
  • Perenuka Mountain Bike Park: Purpose-built trails at Ivon Wilson Recreation Reserve
  • Borland Road: A remote gravel-road option for experienced, properly equipped riders when access and conditions allow

Bike rentals are available in town. Check current rates, e-bike availability, helmets, and return times before planning a longer ride.

A full Fiordland day

Start in town, move through forest, then let the scale open up.

The magic here is the change in texture: lakefront calm, damp beech forest, alpine air, then the sheer walls and waterfalls of the fiords.

Fiordland is home to many rare and endangered bird species. Te Anau and surrounding areas offer excellent birding opportunities:

  • Takahē: Resident takahē can be viewed at Punanga Manu o Te Anau/Te Anau Bird Sanctuary, although sightings and the birds held there can change. The wild Murchison Mountains population is in a specially protected area with tightly controlled access.
  • Kea: New Zealand's alpine parrot may be seen around high-country parts of Fiordland, including the Milford Road. Never feed kea, keep your distance, and secure loose gear.
  • Kea parrot close-up on the Milford Road
  • Kākāpō: These critically endangered nocturnal parrots live at managed sites that are not ordinary visitor destinations. Follow DOC's Kākāpō Recovery updates for the current population and conservation work.
  • Mohua (Yellowhead): Mohua live in protected Fiordland populations, including the Eglinton valley, but seeing or hearing one is never guaranteed.
  • Tūī, Bellbird, Fantail: These native birds may be encountered around Te Anau and on forest walks; sightings vary by habitat, season, and chance.

Nature Photography

Native mushrooms on the forest floor in Fiordland

Possible photography locations include the following, but access, light, visibility, reflections, and wildlife sightings are never guaranteed:

  • Te Anau Lakefront: Sunrise and sunset shots with mountain reflections
  • Mirror Lakes: Earl Mountains reflections when the tarns are calm; check road and DOC access notices
  • Key Summit: Panoramic alpine views on a roughly 3-hour-return walk from The Divide, when DOC confirms access and conditions are suitable
  • The Chasm: River-carved rock formations when DOC confirms the site, car park, and walk are open
  • Milford Sound: Iconic Mitre Peak and waterfalls

Photography workshops and guided tours may be available through local operators. Check current dates, group sizes, and weather terms before booking.

Stargazing

Te Anau's location away from major cities can provide good stargazing on clear nights. Look for southern-sky features from a safe place away from direct lights. The Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve is a separate South Island region; Te Anau is not part of that reserve. Autumn and winter provide longer hours of darkness, but cloud and moonlight still matter.

Booking Tips

Easy Local Things to Do

Te Anau is quieter than places like Queenstown, and that's part of its charm. It's not a busy resort town full of shops and rides — but that's not a bad thing. It's nice to slow down, enjoy the quieter pace, and take in the nature around you. Here are some of the smaller, easier things you can do around town.

Control Gates

Where Lake Te Anau flows into the Waiau River. Close to town, easy to get to, and gives you a nice feel for the area without committing to a big walk. Good for photos and a gentle stroll along the river and lake.

Rainbow Reach

About a 10-minute drive from Te Anau. From the car park it's only a short walk to the swing bridge over the Waiau River — a fantastic spot for photos. If you want to stretch your legs more, you can walk a short section of the Kepler Track from there. An easy way to experience part of the Great Walk without a full-day hike.

Water Taxi to Brod Bay

Take the water taxi from Te Anau across to Brod Bay, then walk part of the Kepler Track back towards the Control Gates or town. You get lake views, native bush, and a proper walk that fits easily into part of a day. Always check current times, prices, and lake conditions before you go.

Lake2Lake Trail

A shared cycling and walking trail that follows Lake Te Anau and the eastern side of the Waiau River toward Lake Manapouri. Short out-and-back sections are possible as well as a longer ride. The full route is not yet continuously off-road: the Fiordland Trails Trust currently identifies an approximately 4 km section on the Te Anau-Manapouri Highway. Check the Trust's current trail status and guidance, and confirm bike or e-bike hire directly with a current provider.

Parkrun (Saturdays)

The Lake2Lake Trail parkrun is a free weekly 5km event near the Control Gates. You don't have to run it — lots of people walk, jog, volunteer, or just come along for the social side. Friendly and well run. Start time changes with the season: 8am during daylight saving, 9am during standard time. Check the official parkrun page for details.

Punanga Manu o Te Anau/Te Anau Bird Sanctuary

A free, self-guided sanctuary on the lakefront, open during daylight hours. DOC notes that species and guided activities have changed, so check the current sanctuary page rather than relying on an old animal list or tour schedule.

Mini Golf & Golf

Mini golf, cycle hire, and a full golf course may be available locally. Check current operators, opening hours, hire terms, and course access before making them part of a fixed plan.

Te Anau Lions Lookout

Not far from town and gives you a great view back over Te Anau, the lake, the mountains, and the wider basin. A simple stop, but on a clear day it's well worth the short drive up.

Aurora Australis (Southern Lights)

You can't plan this like a normal activity — you need the right solar activity, clear skies, and a bit of luck. But when it happens, it's pretty special. The lakefront, marina area, and Ivon Wilson Park (around Lake Henry) are good spots to look south, away from town lights.

Pop Over to Manapouri

Only a short drive from Te Anau. A much smaller town but a really nice place to spend a bit of time. Lake Manapouri has a slightly different feel — islands, mountains, and a quieter lakeside setting. There are good walks around the lake and nearby wetlands too. Well worth a look if you have extra time.

Lord of the Rings Locations

The Waiau River between Te Anau and Manapouri was used as the River Anduin. If that's your thing, you can tie it in with the cycle trail, Rainbow Reach, or a drive towards Manapouri.

The Faith (Historic Motor Yacht)

The Faith is a 19.7-metre wooden motor yacht built in 1935 and currently used for Lake Te Anau cruises and private charters. Check the operator's live departures, inclusions, accessibility, and booking terms. Compare current Viator availability or book directly with the operator.
